Grottos Trail is one of the many options for exploration, offering everything from waterfalls to an ice cave. Whether you are looking to hike, picnic, or simply relax and take in the scenery, Grottos Trail is an easily accessible choice.

About Grottos Trail

Grottos Trail is actually made up of three trails that cater to a variety of ability levels. The shortest trail is a mere 30 yards in length but ends with mighty rewards. The smooth gravel path leads to a beautiful waterfall and serene picnic area. A separate trail leads to the ice caves, which are unique caves formed by the freezing and thawing of snow and ice. Old Stage Road is the longest trail, which meanders along to the banks of Lincoln Creek. Further exploration is possible for those who want to deeper explore the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness.

Best Season to Visit Grottos Trail

The Grottos Trail in Aspen is accessible year-round, but the best time to visit is during the summer months when the weather is warmer, and the trail is less snowy. The water features on this trail are perfect for exploring and cooling off on a warm summer day. During the winter, the trail can be icy and treacherous, making it more challenging to navigate. However, if you’re up for a challenge and enjoy winter hiking or snowshoeing, the trail can still be a beautiful experience during the colder months. If you opt to explore Grottos Trail during springtime, be aware that high water caused by runoff can be very dangerous for hikers.

How to Prepare for Your Visit

Before embarking on your Grottos Trail Aspen adventure, it is essential to prepare properly. Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots, dress in layers, and bring plenty of water and snacks. It is also a good idea to bring a map or download a trail guide, as the trail can be confusing at times. Finally, be sure to check the weather forecast before you head out to ensure that you’re prepared for any conditions you may encounter. Bring along a picnic lunch to be enjoyed with scenic views along the river after you have completed your hike!
