Snowmass, Colorado is one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the country. Thousands flock to Snowmass every year to take in the scenic beauty and carve up the fresh snow. But what many don’t know is that Snowmass is also one a great destination for a Colorado family vacation. Take a look at our guide to having a great family-friendly trip to Snowmass.

Day 1: Learn to Ski

Every ski resort in Colorado is open through March, with most being open into April. Almost all of the local ski resorts have beginner programs to teach new skiers of all ages how to properly and safely have fun on the slopes. Your little ones can learn on the smaller bunny hills and work their way up to full-blown mountain adventures. If skiing isn’t for you family, you can also ride up on the ski lifts for the best sledding that Colorado has to offer. No matter how you want to enjoy the snow with your family, Snowmass has options!

Day 2: Scenic Hiking Around Snowmass

If you find your family is more of the outdoorsy type, make sure you go hiking during your stay in the warmer months. Snowmass Village is nestled in the Brush Creek Valley and is surrounded by more than 90 miles of scenic mountain hiking trails that offer endless options to explore the area. There are multiple different walks depending on what your family wants to observe, but the Nature Trail and Ice Age Discovery tours offer the best insights into the local flora and fossils that were recently found in the area. These two hikes are both free; expect to spend about 1.5 hours on these tours. Both will be fun and educational options for your family to enjoy and make for the best family vacations in Colorado.

We also recommend taking some environmental tours while you are out and about in Snowmass. We suggest that you connect with the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES) to schedule a guided snowshoe or skiing tour. Be sure to visit their Hallam Lake location which features education on animals, including their resident birds of prey.

Day 3: Dogsled Rides

If your little ones love animals, you should consider checking out a local dogsled company. The Rocky Mountains have a rich history of dog sledding, and these sleds have been modernized to offer you a more comfortable travel experience in the Rocky Mountains. Guests can take a sled, which normally carries about two adults and one child, through the twisting and beautiful trails in the mountain slopes of Aspen and Snowmass, led by a team of eight to ten trained Alaskan huskies and guided by a musher—an experienced guide. Afterwards, you can also book a tour of the facilities that host the dogs and learn more about how these majestic animals are cared for.

Day 4: Sports and Outdoor Fun

Snowmass has multiple ways that families can test their climbing skills. The Limelight Snowmass features an indoor rock-climbing wall that measures in at a monstruous five stories tall. This places it at the top of the list of largest indoor climbing options in the entire state. No matter what time of year you family wants to visit Snowmass, you have to check out this amazing adventure on your Colorado family vacation.

If you want to take in the amazing views and lush scenic view while raising up the fun level of your family trip, look no further than Lost Forest Adventure Center. Lost Forest Adventure Center is the perfect place for the whole family to act like kids. This adventure park features many different activities to enjoy. Along with their rock wall, Lost Forest also features a rope challenge course and long zip lines that allow guest to soar through the air at intense speeds. The crown jewel of Lost Forest is the Alpine Coaster. Riders control the hand brakes as they fly down the gravity slide at their own speeds. The views from the coaster are breathtaking, and you’ll want to ride again and again!

Day 5: Rodeo Snowmass

Every Wednesday night during the summer features a rodeo in Snowmass Village. Families can don their cowboy attire and head down for some fine barbecue meats and roping contests. Guests can simply watch the customs or join in on the fun with events like Mutton Bustin’ and Calf Scramble. The Mutton Bustin’ event allows guests to ride and attempt to hold onto a sheep, while the Calf Scramble pits visitors against each other to see who can grab a ribbon off a running calf’s tail. Your kids are sure to laugh their own tails off watching Mom and Dad try to chase down a running calf!
