Places to View Fall Foliage Around Aspen

Consistently ranked one of the best places in the country to see the fall colors, Aspen will truly amaze with the glowing golden leaves filling the mountainous landscape. Typically, the best time to see Aspen’s peak leaf colors is the 3rd or 4th week of September into the middle of October. Below is our list of some of the spots that you need to visit to fully experience the beauty of our namesake trees. Maroon Bells

With a reflective lake at the foot of two giant peaks, it’s hard not to be overwhelmed with the beauty and serenity of the area. Snowmass Village
Snowmass Fall Foliage | Snowmass Condominium Right outside of your Timberline Condo vacation rental are some of the best opportunities to see the fall colors. There are a variety of levels of hiking and biking trails and multitudes of different terrain to explore, so you can experience this beautiful time of year any way you would like. With typically mild days and warmer nights this is the perfect time to visit and be sure to also check out some of the local events. CNN even rated Snowmass as one of the top ten places in the country for “leaf Peeping”.

The Ditch Trail, the Rim Trail, and the Tom Blake trail are all moderate hiking/biking trails in Snowmass, and all three offer incredible leaf-peeping opportunities in the fall. Aside from the beautiful yellow Aspen Trees, the Scrub Oak lights up the Snowmass hillsides in a fiery red in the fall – just breathtaking.

Castle Creek Road 
Ashcroft Ghost Town | Timberline Condominiums Castle Creek Road is full of unique places and sites. One spot not to miss is the ghost town of Ashcroft – step back in time to Aspen’s silver boom days, and explore this centuries old mining town still in tact. Ashcroft is surrounded by the golden trees and is a great way to see things the way early settlers would have.

Castle Creek Road will also take you to several popular hiking destinations including, Cathedral Lake,  American lake, 14er’s Castle and Conundrum, and the Conundrum Hot springs. Additionally, Castle Creek Road is a very popular road biking destination, with it’s smooth winding road and stunning views. Just make sure to start biking early, before the road becomes crowded with hikers and leaf peepers driving by.

Independence Pass
Independence Pass Fall Foliage | Timberline CondominiumIf you want to enjoy the foliage from the comfort of your car and still experience the best this area has to offer, then make sure to take a trip over Independence Pass. With the summit of Independence Pass reaching 12,095 feet, you will not be disappointed by the views and overwhelming beauty. Independence Pass winds through several large stands of Aspen Trees, sure to take your breath away. There are several great picnic spots and short hiking trails right off Independence Pass as well, including the Discovery/Braille Trail, Weller Lake, Grottos Day Use Area, Lost Man Trail, Linkins Lake, and North Fork Lake Creek. Or drive all the way over the Pass to the town of Twin Lakes, grab a bit to eat and explore the town, and head back to Aspen – a perfect day trip.
